I found a lump in my left breast while putting on my bra that snaps in the front. I don’t think I would of found this if it wasn’t for the placement of it being so close to the edge of my breast and close to the snap. I also would feel a tingling sensation in the area every now and then, sometimes it would itch a little.

My first surgery was on September 22, 2005 where I had a lump in my breast removed. I got the call on September 26th that is was cancerous. My second re-excision surgery was on October 5th.

I did six weeks of radiation starting on October 26, 2005. What a whirlwind those months were!

Don’t Let Congress Go Home Without Funding the Fight Against Cancer

As you know, we have been working hard this year to encourage our elected officials to provide the funding survivors need in the battle against cancer, and have reminded them repeatedly about the need to make this effort a national priority. Yet, as Congress returns from their August recess, there is still a lot of work to do before they break for the year, and we need your help.

There have been improvements since our efforts started at the beginning of the year. The House and Senate Appropriations Committees have each passed their respective Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill, which funds cancer research and programs. While the committee approval of both bills is a step in the right direction, neither adequately meets the needs of cancer patients and survivors, and both fail to adequately fund research and access to services.

In response to an outcry from the cancer community and other health-related groups, this spring the U.S. Senate voted 73-27 for an additional $7 billion in funding for education, job training and public health programs, and the House Leadership made a public commitment to provide the same. Unfortunately, this funding has not materialized. The Committees tasked with making the final decisions on funding levels have billions of dollars less than they need to address the cuts to all education, labor and health programs. Due to this shortfall, critical cancer research and prevention programs could be severely under funded unless something is done.

This is unacceptable. These programs have shown results and need to have the backing of our elected officials. Before Congress goes home in September to campaign for your vote, send a clear message that we must make the necessary investments in cancer research and programs.

Send an email, letter or fax to your congressional leader.
